Tips for Working with Policymakers

1. Identify your issue. Make sure it is one about which you have a passion! Every Issue should consider “What is best for our students?”

2. Be as informed as possible about your issue and be absolutely factual. Recognize all sides of the issue so you may better make your case.

3. Identify those who can help you with your message.

4. Develop identifiable goals and objectives that can ascertain results.

5. Identify your target audience. Make sure that you have chosen the appropriate people/groups to address your concerns.

6. Develop your presentation and practice!

7. Make your presentation.
- Be articulate and succinct.
- Be prepared to share “stories” as examples.
- Know major points and emphasize them.

8. Be accessible! Partnerships are the key.

9. Be positive and proactive.

10. Be persistent. Don’t give up!
